When Should You Book an International Flight? The Real Answer

"How far in advance should I book?" is the question we get most. The honest answer has three parts: a general window, a peak-season override, and a set of habits that matter more than either.

The general window

For most international routes in normal seasons, fares tend to be at their most reasonable somewhere in the range of 2 to 5 months before departure. Book absurdly early (9–11 months out) and you often pay the airline's opening "we'll see" prices. Book inside 3–4 weeks and you're shopping what's left, at prices that know you're committed.

The peak-season override

Peaks break the general rule — demand is so predictable that fares start high and only go higher. For these, earlier is simply better:

The habits that matter more than timing

  1. Search flexible dates first. The calendar-view search is the single most valuable ten minutes in trip planning.
  2. Know your "book it" number. Research what your route normally costs, decide your threshold, and act when a fare crosses it — don't renegotiate with yourself while the seat map fills.
  3. Check one-stop options. Especially on long-haul, connections are the reliable discount.
  4. Don't stalk a booked fare. Once you've bought at a price you were happy with, stop looking. That way lies madness.

What about waiting for a sale?

Flash sales and mistake fares are real but unpredictable — treat them as luck you can position for (be on a deals list, know your threshold) rather than a strategy you can schedule. If a normal-season fare is already at or below the typical price for your route, booking beats waiting most of the time.

Flomicso tip: Tell us your route and month in a trip request and we'll tell you honestly whether to book now or wait — including when the answer is "this price is already good, take it."
