If you know, you know: December in Lagos is not a holiday, it's a season. Concerts, beach parties, weddings stacked three-deep on every Saturday, old friends back from London, Houston, and Toronto — Detty December is the biggest homecoming on the African calendar, and every year it gets bigger.
It also gets more expensive every year — if you plan late. Here's how to do it right.
When to book your flight (this matters most)
December flights to Lagos are the single most predictable price spike in African travel. Demand from the diaspora is enormous and airlines know it. In our experience:
- July–August is the sweet spot for booking December travel. Fares are still behaving normally and seat selection is wide open.
- September–October, prices begin climbing steadily as the diaspora wakes up.
- November, you're paying peak prices and fighting for the dates everyone wants (roughly Dec 13–23 outbound).
Flexible dates save real money
Everyone wants to land the same week. If you can fly out in the first week of December and return in the second week of January, you avoid the worst of both peaks. Mid-week departures (Tuesday/Wednesday) are consistently cheaper than weekend flights on Lagos routes.
Where to stay
- Victoria Island / Ikoyi: closest to the December action — concerts, restaurants, beach clubs. Hotels here price up hard in December, so book early.
- Lekki Phase 1: the short-let capital. Serviced apartments are plentiful and often better value than hotels for stays over a week — but insist on reviews and verified listings.
- Ikeja / mainland: significantly cheaper and close to the airport, but budget for serious traffic anytime you cross to the Island in December.
Budgeting: what December actually costs
Beyond flights and accommodation, December in Lagos runs on events. Concert tickets, beach club entries, table service, and boat days add up quickly — many travelers spend as much on the season itself as on the flight. Set an events budget before you land, and remember that cash and transfers both have their place: carry some naira, but most venues on the Island accept cards and transfers.
Practical notes
- Documents: check your passport validity (six months beyond travel is the safe standard) and confirm current entry requirements with the Nigeria Immigration Service well before travel — rules and processes change.
- Airport transfers: pre-book your pickup. Landing at MMIA in December without arranged transport is a rookie mistake.
- Health: yellow fever vaccination proof is commonly requested for Nigeria — check current requirements and carry your card.
- Connectivity: grab a travel eSIM before you fly or a local SIM on arrival; December is not the month to be roaming at US rates.
