Dubai's reputation says "expensive." The reality: it's one of the easiest places in the world to have a five-star-looking trip on a three-star budget — if you time it right and know where the value hides.
When to go
November through March is the sweet spot — warm, not furnace-hot. Prices peak around New Year and major events. For the best value, target late January through February or the shoulder weeks of November: great weather, softer hotel rates.
US passport holders currently receive entry on arrival for short tourist visits — but confirm the latest requirements before you book, as entry policies can change.
Day-by-day: the value itinerary
Day 1 — Old Dubai
Start in Deira and Bur Dubai: the gold and spice souks, an abra (water taxi) across the Creek for pocket change, and the Al Fahidi historic district. This is the cheapest and most atmospheric day you'll have.
Day 2 — Downtown
Burj Khalifa views don't require the observation deck: the Dubai Fountain show is free every evening, and the Dubai Mall is an attraction in itself. If you do go up the tower, book non-prime hours online in advance — same view, better price.
Day 3 — Beach day
Kite Beach and JBR's public beach are free, clean, and have full facilities. You do not need a beach club to have a Dubai beach day.
Day 4 — Desert safari
The one splurge worth making. Group desert safaris (dunes, sunset, dinner camp) are heavily competed, which keeps prices reasonable — book as part of a package rather than at hotel-lobby rates.
Day 5 — Marina & wrap-up
Walk the Marina, take the pedestrian promenade at JBR, and spend your last evening at a waterfront restaurant off the front row — one street back, the same food costs noticeably less.
Where the money hides
- Hotels: staying one metro stop away from the icons cuts rates dramatically. The metro is clean, fast, and cheap.
- Food: Dubai's best cheap eating is its South Asian and Middle Eastern neighborhood restaurants — legendary meals for a fraction of hotel-restaurant prices.
- Alcohol: the single biggest budget-killer in Dubai. Happy hours and brunch deals exist; full-price hotel bars will hurt.
- Transport: metro + occasional ride-hailing beats renting a car for most visitors.
