Every Cancún planning session hits the same fork: all-inclusive resort, or a regular hotel plus eating out? Everyone has an opinion. Here's the actual math and the honest answer: it depends on how you vacation.
The case for all-inclusive
- Cost certainty. You pay once and the meter stops. For families and groups, this alone is worth a premium — nobody's doing math at dinner.
- Drinks. If your beach vacation includes cocktails at a resort bar, all-inclusive nearly always wins. Resort-priced drinks à la carte add up brutally fast.
- Kids. Children's meals, snacks, activities, and kids' clubs are where all-inclusives quietly earn their price.
The case for DIY
- Food quality and variety. Cancún and the Riviera Maya have outstanding restaurants — tacos al pastor downtown, beach clubs in Tulum, seafood in Puerto Morelos. All-inclusive buffets can't compete with eating your way around the region.
- You actually leave the resort. If your plan includes Chichén Itzá, cenotes, Isla Mujeres, or Tulum, you're paying for resort meals you won't eat. Day-trippers waste the most all-inclusive value.
- Light drinkers and small appetites almost always come out ahead booking room-only and paying as they go.
The honest rule of thumb
Count the hours. If you'll spend most of your trip on the resort property — pool, beach, bar, repeat — all-inclusive is usually the better deal and definitely the more relaxing one. If you'll be out exploring most days, a well-located regular hotel plus restaurants wins on both cost and experience.
Timing notes
Cancún prices peak over Christmas–New Year, US spring break, and Easter. Late spring and the fall shoulder months offer the best rate-to-weather ratio — with the caveat that fall is hurricane season, so travel insurance is a smart add-on, not a luxury.
